WorkingWiki/Fonts and Browser Compatibility

WorkingWiki wikis should work [sic] in any web browser. The math is displayed using MathJax, so it should work in any browser that MathJax supports.

The Firefox option

If you are using a browser that can display math better without MathJax (i.e. Firefox), you can skip MathJax and use your browser's native MathML rendering, by going to your wiki preferences page (the "my preferences" or "Preferences" link at the very top of the wiki page) and, depending on your MediaWiki version,

  • changing the "Math" setting to "MathML if possible", or
  • changing the "WorkingWiki" setting in "Appearance" to "Use browser's MathML rendering when available", or
  • changing the "WorkingWiki" setting in "Rendering" to "Use browser's MathML rendering when available".

If you choose to use this option, you may see a message about "missing MathML fonts". This means you need to install compatible fonts for displaying math. The simplest and probably best way is to install the STIX font package. On most Linux distributions, you can just install it using your package manager. Here are Mozilla's more detailed instructions. (Linux users: those instructions don't mention you can install the fonts to your system in /usr/share/fonts or a similar directory. That's where I have them. –WuLi)
